This talk by Holger Schulze, titled 'Acoustic Scenography: Niches, resonances & auditory pathways in the showroom', focuses on two exhibitions to explore the possibilities and limitations within the increasingly established forms of acoustic scenography in the museum.
Scenography – the practice of visual and spatial design – is at the core of every exhibition. How an exhibition is experienced acoustically has traditionally been limited to audio guides and podcasts providing narration on themes and explanatory interviews. For some time now, however, not only sound artistic but also sound design practices have been developed for the exhibition space. Initially these sound design practices in the gallery were situated in experimental laboratory conditions but later became framed as artistic projects and applied forms of staging in the museum.
The talk will propose a deeper understanding of acoustic scenography and an invitation to consider the auditory design of an exhibition as a highly effective form of representation.
