A collage split down the middle, one side a blue violin neck coming out of a gold gramophone, the other side a gold sculpted Balinese dragon face with a blue palm frond behind it.

From a cozy European salon to the humid streets of a Balinese community, UNSW’s Gamelan and Chamber Ensembles will take you on a dynamic musical journey. Strings and percussion, small and large, soft and loud, ancient and contemporary, Eastern and Western traditions. Mashed together in program of tension and harmony.

Chamber music evolved from the European salon of the 18th and 19th centuries, exploring the musical possibilities of intimate conversations among individual players. Performances by our Chamber Ensembles include string quartets and piano, combinations of strings and piano accompaniment, and a guitar trio, in repertoire extending from the baroque period to the late 20th century.

The Balinese Gamelan is one of the most renowned Indonesian ensembles, it's gongs and metallophones echo across neighborhoods bringing people together. Over the course of the 20th Century this has influenced a wide variety of Western composers, in part because of its unique musical textures and rhythmic techniques. A mix of traditional and contemporary compositions will illustrate unique features of Balinese gamelan music.
