Edge of the Present: The first VR experience for suicide prevention
In 2019, The Big Anxiety launched Edge of the Present -- a ‘mixed reality’ [XR] (virtual and physical) environment designed to cultivate future thinking. Inspired by neuropsychological research on memory and imagination, and the contributions of participants with lived experiences of suicide survival, the XR environment improved mood and reduced feelings of hopelessness in under 10 minutes.
Supported by Movember and utilising a new generation of VR/AR headsets, we are now developing a more portable version of the experience, in which users generate massive transformation of the environment by open doors and windows. This will be tested in YouTurn Headspaces across regional Queensland in 2023-4.
Currently in development, lead designers Alex Davies and Josh Harle will share the current iteration in the Open Studio.
