Join us to celebrate and discuss a new book by Gabriela Silva Loureiro: Emotions, Consciousness-Raising and Feminisms in the Global South: On Building Solidarity

What are the emotions involved in building and sustaining solidarity? What happens when expectations of feminist solidarity crash against political disagreements? How can we use decolonial theory and community activism praxis to unravel the coloniality present in social justice efforts? Dr Gabriela Silva Loureiro’s Emotions, Consciousness-Raising and Feminisms in the Global South explores these critical questions through the analysis of narratives about emotions and the embodiment of emotions in Brazilian digital mobilisations. In this talk, Gabriela will present one aspect of the book: her main findings of the discourse analysis of 179 hashtagged Facebook posts and interviews with eight feminist activists in Brazil. She will ultimately focus on   conflicts around difference that emerge in collective attempts for social justice. She will also explore suggestions of how to interpret and deal with such conflicts, drawing on Latinx and decolonial praxis of coalitional politics. The ultimate aim is to create a bridge between the sociology of emotions, feminist theory, and decolonial, Black, and Global South literature and praxis.
