Hear and enquire from two highly experienced professionals in the humanitarian shelter and settlement space.

Sandra D’Urzo Senior Officer, Shelter and Settlements with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) based in Geneva. Sandra is an architect whose work aims to improve the living conditions of vulnerable people. She designs and implements tools for Shelter risk reduction and leads post-disaster programmes in the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. She is a much-in-demand lecturer in European universities and has extensively written on post-disaster reconstruction, architecture and human dignity.

Professor Esther Charlesworth is based in the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT University, Melbourne where she leads the Humanitarian Architecture Research Bureau (HARB) in rebuilding and protecting vulnerable communities displaced by conflict and naturally-triggered disasters. Esther pioneered the Masters degree in Disaster, Design and Development at RMIT. Esther has worked in the public and private sectors of architecture and urban design in Melbourne, Sydney, New York, Boston and Beirut since graduating with a Masters in Architecture and Urban from Harvard University in 1995. She is the founding Director of Architects without Frontiers (AWF) and has published widely on the theme of social responsibility and architecture.
