A dash of blues, a hint of noir, and a splash of red. Jazz Tones is a night covering the spectrum of jazz from well-known standards to original compositions and playful improvisation. These bands are presenting a kaleidoscopic program for their final performance of 2022.
The UNSW Jazz Orchestra is bringing together students from across the university with alumni and special guests to present five contrasting pieces: Blues in 3 is a raucous Charlie Mingus style swinger in 3/4; Shererit blends Ethiopian harmonies with Latin salsa; I Watch Too Many Spy Flicks is a nod to dramatic film noir soundtracks by band member Jaden Victoria; Red Militia is energetically funky and written by band member Shawna O’Neill; and Blues For… is a laid back and lazy swinger of a tune. All works are written by Australian composers, with the ensemble directed by Ellen Kirkwood who leads contemporary jazz quartet Underwards.
Featuring brilliant instrumentalists and vocalists, the Intermediate Jazz Ensemble will perform a range of jazz standards and jazz-related material, all with a focus on exciting improvisation and spontaneous musical interaction. The repertoire features a diversity of styles and eras, from American swing, Brazilian Bossa Nova, Australian Contemporary jazz, and jazz interpretations of favourite pop songs. The band is directed by performer and composer Adrian Lim-Klumpes, member of 'post-everything' quintet Tangents.
