A celebration of jazz, Sonorous Spring bubbles up with joy as three ensembles combine for a diverse program. Drink up the soulful basslines and wickedly complex rhythms of Indian Jazz, the harmonic opportunities of neo-soul, and the sublime compositions of UNSW’s own jazz legends Sandy Evans and Alister Spence. Music so good you’ll want to bottle it.

Panchava

Featuring the music of Shakti and Remember Shakti, this Indian Jazz Quartet explores the uplifting and beautiful Indian jazz space. Their set highlights each member's musical character - Jonas Tay's (drums) wickedly complex and tightly syncopated rhythms, Lavan Subenthiran's (electric guitar) colourful and intricate melodic lines/voicings, Phil Langshaw’s (bass guitar) soulful and funky basslines, and Sahil Mahbubani's (bansuri) sweet, free-flowing melodies.

Advanced Jazz Ensemble

The Advanced Jazz Ensemble continues to explore various corners of the contemporary jazz landscape. In this concert the music ranges from the up-tempo funk rockishness of Fiona Apple’s ‘Fast as you Can’, to the sublime understated beauty of Sandy Evan’s jazz ballad ‘Purple Dress’, the harmonic and rhythmic groove of Alister Spence’s ‘Never Forget’, and the outrageously mind-bending rhythms of Tigran Hamasayan’s ‘The Court Jester’. Within this diverse repertoire the ensemble displays a unique, unified expression, as performers both separately and together.
