Please join us for this special screening of At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, followed by a post-film discussion with the documentary's producer and co-writer, Dr Steven Ungerleider (award-winning author of six books, including Faust’s Gold).

In the midst of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, this event will feature Dr Ungerleider in conversation with the Director of the Australian Human Rights Institute, Professor Justine Nolan, and former Olympian Nikki Dryden (a director of the Centre for Sports and Human Rights, and Australian Human Rights Institute Associate). Together, they'll explore some of the themes of the film and look more broadly at some of the human rights challenges affecting sportspeople around the world.

Based on years of research by producers Dr Steven Ungerleider and David Ulich, and featuring brave testimonials from the athletes at the centre of the story, director Erin Lee Carr’s powerful documentary, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, reveals a dangerous system that prioritised winning over everything else, including protecting young female athletes. Through interviews with dozens of survivors, as well as coaches, lawyers and journalists, the film exposes an environment in which young women spent their youth competing for victory on a world stage, juxtaposed against a culture where abuse was hidden, and lives were forever damaged.
