A night of Jazz, Bulgarian Voices and Turkish Beats

A captivating night of jazz and world music inspired by Balkan sounds and Turkish rhythms. Featuring guest artists Mara Kiek on tapan, Llew Kiek on bouzouki, Musharrem Aslan on the baglama, our own Jazz legends Sandy Evans and Alister Spence, and the talents of UNSW music students. This eclectic evening will feature some stunning traditional works mixed with new compositions and melodies.

We begin with a joyful selection of traditional songs arranged for Female Folk Choirs in a modern choral tradition developed by Bulgarian composer Filip Kutev then move into a fascinating collaboration with the UNSW Jazz Orchestra presenting a selection of works with the Bulgarian Voices and influenced by Turkish jazz fusion and featuring our guest artists.

Mixed into this will be a jazz and funk set from the Jazz Orchestra followed by a set of fresh compositions from the UNSW Advanced Jazz Ensemble influenced and inspired by Balkan rhythms and melodies.

It all adds up to a warm-hearted, inspiring and life affirming night of music, the old and the new, from our world, east and west.
