Reducing risk, building resilience
We live in a rapidly changing word, where no city or community is immune to accumulating risk from rapid urbanisation and climate change. The well-being of a growing world population in ordinary circumstances, and their ability survive extraordinary events relies on buildings, neighbourhoods and cities being safe, inclusive and resilient. But, what does this mean in practice? What is the role of architects, engineers and other built environment professionals in ensuring no one is left behind and able to survive and thrive whatever happens?
Director at Arup International Development Jo da Silva will share lessons learned from Arup’s experiences over the past 10 years working with marginalised communities, responding to humanitarian crises, and collaborating with international donors and civil society organisations to deliver projects and develop new approaches that reduce risk and build resilience

Jo da Silva is an Arup Fellow and Director, International Development which she has led for the past 10 years. She has recently taken on the role of Global Sustainable Development Leader.
As a chartered structural/civil engineer Jo has been responsible for the design and delivery of infrastructure projects in Europe, Africa, and Asia for both public and private sector. She has also worked extensively with the United Nations, World Bank and NGOs, in the aftermath of disasters and on development programmes focussing on risk reduction and resilience.
Her published research includes Characteristics of a Resilient Community which has been incorporated in the International Federation of the Red Cross Framework for Community Resilience, and the City Resilience Index which has been used adopted by 100Resilient Cities globally. She is currently advising the Resilience Shift, an initiative supported by the Lloyds Register Foundation to catalyse resilience within and between critical infrastructure sectors.
Jo studied Engineering at Cambridge University, where she also spent 5 years as a part-time Fellow, Sydney Sussex College, visiting lecturer on the MPhil Engineering for Sustainable Development, and Faculty for Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership. She has been awarded a Doctor of Technology (Hon), Coventry University, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy Engineering, Institution of Civil Engineers and Institution of Structural Engineers. She was made an Officer of the British Empire for her services to engineering and humanitarian response, and was awarded the Institution of Structural Engineers Gold Medal last year in recognition of her pioneering work as a humanitarian engineer and on city resilience.
