A Social Sciences Week 2025 event – presented by the UNSW School of Social Sciences.

Join two world-leading experts, Chris Sidoti and Professor Jan Breckenridge, in a critical conversation about gendered and sexual violence as a weapon of war. The event will discuss a recent UN report about Israel and Palestine.

Speakers:

Chris Sidoti is one of Australia's most experienced human rights advocates and practitioners. He is Commissioner on the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, which authored the report, "“More than a human can bear”: Israel’s systematic use of sexual, reproductive and other forms of gender-based violence since 7 October 2023". He is a former Australian Human Rights Commissioner and a former commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission.

Jan Breckenridge is a Professor and Head of the School of Social Sciences, Co-Convener of the UNSW Gendered Violence Research Network, and a Research Fellow of the UNSW Australian Human Rights Institute (AHRI). She is a world-leader in gendered, domestic and family violence, and her research expertise has shaped policy nationally and internationally.
