UNSW’s Grand Challenge in Rapid Urbanisation and the Institute for Global Development invite you to join the first of three webinars as part of series: Urbanisation at risk in the Pacific? Meet the Authors.

The first webinar will see UNSW’s Professor David Sanderson explore lessons from Tropical Cyclone Winston in Fiji with Anna Gero and Dr Keren Winterford from the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).

The three webinars are opportunities for further discussion with contributing authors from the newly- released edited book, Urbanisation at Risk in the Pacific and Asia. Disasters, Climate Change and Resilience in the Built Environment.

 

The speakers:

David Sanderson is a Professor and the Inaugural Judith Neilson Chair in Architecture at UNSW, Sydney. David has worked across the world in development and emergencies for nearly 30 years. David is editor of the 2016 IFRC World Disasters Report and author of the ODI/ALNAP 2019 Good Practice Review in Urban Humanitarian Response. David lead's UNSW's Grand Challenge on Rapid Urbanisation.

Anna Gero is a climate change and disaster risk leader and specialist with over 10 years experience in the Asia-Pacific region. Anna is an experienced project manager, and has led climate change and disaster resilience consultancies, evaluations and research projects since 2008 across 10 Pacific Island Countries. Anna has an applied understanding of the range of ways climate change and disasters influence development. She has published numerous research and evaluation reports.

Dr Keren Winterford has more than 20 years’ experience working in the international development sector with NGOs, as a private consultant, and more recently in development research. Keren has extensive experience working in the Pacific on climate change related research, evaluation and consultancy activities, many of which have included a focus on risk governance and gender and social inclusion.

 

About the webinar series:

The Urbanisation at risk in the Pacific? Meet the Authors webinar series is in celebration of David Sanderson and Laura Bruce’s newly edited book: Urbanisation at Risk in the Pacific and Asia. Disasters, Climate Change and Resilience in the Built Environment.

The webinar series will feature seven contributing authors, who will deliberate and expand on topics spanning urban resilience, climate change vulnerability, the social dimensions of change and lessons learnt from disasters.

The Urbanisation at risk in the Pacific? Meet the Authors webinar series is run in partnership with the Institute for Global Development and in affiliation with the second Urban Resilience Asia Pacific Conference – URAP 2.

The series comprises of:

  • Webinar 1: The humanitarian-development nexus in Pacific urban contexts: lessons from tropical cyclone Winston in Fiji
  • Webinar 2: Reflecting on a journey from climate change vulnerability assessments to the implementation of climate resilience actions: Honiara, Solomon Islands
  • Webinar 3: Resilience in Pacific towns and cities: the social dimensions of change

David Sanderson

Host

Professor David Sanderson has 30 years’ experience working across the world in development and emergencies. He worked for eight years for the NGO CARE International UK, as head of policy and subsequently regional manager for southern and west Africa. From 2006-2013 David was Director of CENDEP, a centre at Oxford Brookes University focusing on development and emergencies. Between 2013-14 he was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University. David was appointed the Inaugural Judith Neilson Chair in Architecture at UNSW Sydney in 2016.
