Navigating the use of Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) in Oncology Care
Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are widely recognised as central to patient-centred cancer care, yet integrating them into routine clinical practice remains challenging. In this seminar, Dr Anne Schuster (The Ohio State University; PROTEUS Consortium) will share insights from the PROTEUS Consortium and the PROTEUS Learning Health Network, a multi-site initiative working to improve how PRO measures are implemented and used across oncology services.Drawing on experiences from 10 oncology projects across adult and paediatric settings, this session will explore the realities of implementing PROs in practice. It will cover common challenges, including integrating PROs into clinical workflows and electronic health records, ensuring appropriate clinical responses, and designing inclusive approaches to patient engagement.Importantly, the seminar will focus on practical, tested strategies to address these challenges, such as workflow redesign, multimodal and multilingual data collection, improved data visualisation, and system-level feedback loops. Rather than focusing on theory alone, the session will highlight real-world lessons learned from diverse oncology contexts.
